When Should You See a General Physician? A Complete Guide

May 16, 2025 Dr. Rohit Panchal 5 min read

One of the most common mistakes people make is waiting too long to see a doctor. Either they dismiss symptoms as "nothing serious," or they go straight to a specialist when a general physician could solve the problem far more efficiently. This guide helps you understand when and why to visit a GP — and why your general physician is often the most important doctor you will ever see.

What Does a General Physician Do?

A general physician (GP) is your primary care doctor — trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions across all body systems and all age groups. Unlike specialists who focus on one organ or system, a GP sees the whole picture of your health. Key responsibilities include:

  • Diagnosing and treating acute illnesses (infections, fever, pain)
  • Managing chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension, asthma, thyroid)
  • Preventive care and health screenings
  • Coordinating referrals to appropriate specialists
  • Monitoring medications and their interactions
  • Health counselling — diet, lifestyle, mental health

Think of your GP as your health co-ordinator. They know your full medical history, spot patterns in your health over time, and guide you to the right care at the right time.

Symptoms That Need a Same-Day GP Visit

  • Fever above 102°F (39°C) in adults, especially with body aches
  • Any fever in a child under 3 months
  • Severe throat pain making it difficult to swallow
  • Ear pain with discharge
  • Urinary burning or pain (UTI symptoms)
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea lasting more than 24 hours
  • Skin rash, especially if spreading rapidly
  • Suspected animal bite or wound needing assessment
  • Persistent cough with coloured phlegm or blood

Symptoms That Warrant a GP Visit Within 2–3 Days

  • Mild fever lasting more than 3 days
  • Persistent fatigue with no obvious cause
  • Unexplained weight loss or gain
  • Recurring headaches
  • Changes in bowel habits lasting more than 2 weeks
  • Mild chest discomfort or occasional palpitations
  • Joint pain or stiffness affecting daily activities
  • Sleep problems or mood changes

Symptoms Requiring Emergency Care (Not GP)

Call emergency services or go to the nearest hospital immediately for: Chest pain or tightness, difficulty breathing, sudden severe headache, face drooping or arm weakness (stroke signs), loss of consciousness, severe allergic reaction, major trauma or bleeding, high fever with neck stiffness and sensitivity to light.

The Case for Regular Health Check-Ups

Even when you feel perfectly well, an annual check-up with your GP is valuable. Many serious conditions — high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, early kidney disease, high cholesterol — have no symptoms in the early stages but are easily detected with a simple blood test and examination.

Early detection means:

  • Simpler, less expensive treatment
  • Better long-term outcomes
  • Prevention of complications before they occur
  • Peace of mind knowing your health is on track

When to See a Specialist vs. Your GP First

Many people go directly to specialists (cardiologist, dermatologist, orthopaedic) thinking it will save time. In most cases, seeing your GP first is the better approach:

  • Your GP can often treat the condition directly — saving you the specialist fee
  • When a specialist is needed, your GP provides a referral with your full medical history — making the specialist visit much more productive
  • GPs prevent unnecessary specialist visits for conditions that can be managed in primary care
